Why add a camera

Numerical sensors are essential, but they do not tell everything. A camera adds visual context: clear sky, veils, clouds, haze, sunset light and the general state of the scene.

The Raspberry Pi Camera therefore becomes the project’s first “eye”. It does not replace the sensors; it complements them.

Historical shots and comparison over time

The initial goal is simple: capture periodic images and keep them as history. Even one shot every few minutes can become useful for rereading a day, comparing light and clouds, and connecting weather events to data.

In the future, images may help classify sky conditions more intelligently: sunny, hazy, cloudy, overcast or night.

Not just any webcam

The camera should not be a decorative webcam. It must become part of the observatory architecture: capture, storage, timestamp, possible dashboard thumbnail and browsable archive.

The value is not just seeing “a photo”, but connecting image, time and environmental data.
