Temperature alone is not enough

Temperature is the most immediate value, but by itself it says little. To decide whether to observe the sky, relationships between values matter: humidity, wind, dew point, Moon phase and astronomical darkness.

An evening may look good at first glance, but become complicated if the temperature is very close to the dew point. In that case, the risk of dew on instruments increases and observing can become frustrating.

Dew point as an operational value

The dashboard calculates dew point and the margin from the current temperature. The lower the margin, the more likely dew becomes.

This value is particularly useful with lightweight or automated instruments, because dew can worsen images, lenses, sensors and the overall quality of the session.

Wind and stability

Wind is not only a comfort condition. For observing, it can introduce vibrations, mechanical instability and worsen image quality.

That is why the dashboard does not only show the wind value, but translates it into observing impact: light, moderate, sustained or strong.

A 0-to-100 summary

The “Observing conditions” card tries to summarise these factors in a score. It is not meant to be an absolute scientific truth, but a quick decision: is it worth going outside, testing, observing or leaving the instruments indoors?

The goal is to turn scattered data into a practical answer.
